Q: Do you arrange hotel accommodation for this tour, or do we book our own?

Both options work. Sri Lankan Spring Tours can arrange every night of your stay - budget guesthouses, 3-star, 4-star and 5-star hotels, boutique villas or eco-lodges - and we will send you the property names and photos before you confirm. If you prefer to book your own hotels, we simply run the tour as a private transport and guiding package and your chauffeur guide collects you from wherever you are staying. Q: Can we change the number of days or swap destinations in this itinerary?

Yes. Every tour we run is private, so nothing here is fixed. We regularly shorten this 7-day route, extend it with extra beach or safari days, or rebuild it around your flight times and interests. There are no fixed departure dates - this is a private tour that starts on any day you choose. Q: Is this tour suitable for families with young children?

Yes. We provide clean, international-standard infant car seats and toddler booster seats on request, we build in rest stops on the longer drives, and we can slow the pace down or add pool days wherever you like. Please mention your children's ages when you enquire so we can pick family-friendly hotels and adjust the driving hours.

Q: When is the best time of year to do this tour?

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so the island is in season somewhere all year round. The west and south coasts and the hill country are at their best from December to April, while the east coast around Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Arugam Bay is best from May to September. We run private tours every month of the year and will advise you on the best route for your dates.

Day 01 :

Arrival at Colombo Airport & Negombo Beach

Airport pick-up by your private chauffeur guide and a short transfer to the beach town of Negombo - ideal for families arriving after a long flight.

Rest by the pool or on the beach.
Optional late-afternoon Negombo lagoon boat ride through the mangroves.

Day 02 :

Negombo to Sigiriya via Pinnawala & Minneriya Elephant Safari

Head inland to the Cultural Triangle with two elephant experiences in one day.

Morning stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to watch the herd bathing in the river.
Late-afternoon 4x4 jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, where large herds gather on the reservoir grasslands.

Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana

Day 03 :

Sigiriya Lion Rock & Hiriwadunna Village Experience

An early start to beat the heat, then a relaxed, hands-on afternoon.

Morning: Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress to see the frescoes, the mirror wall and the summit palace ruins.
Afternoon: Traditional village experience at Hiriwadunna - a bullock cart ride, a catamaran crossing of the village lake and a clay-pot cooking demonstration the children can join in with.

Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana

Day 04 :

Dambulla Cave Temple, Spice Garden & Kandy

Move south into the hills, stopping for culture and spices along the way.

Morning: Explore the Dambulla Golden Rock Cave Temples and their 150-plus Buddha statues.
Midday: Visit a Matale spice garden to see cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla growing.
Evening: Arrive in Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth Relic ceremony and a colourful Kandyan dance and drumming show.

Overnight: Kandy

Day 05 :

Peradeniya Gardens & the Tea Hills of Nuwara Eliya

A scenic climb into the cool central highlands.

Morning: Space to run around in the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, home to the giant Javan fig tree.
Midday: Drive past Ramboda Falls and tiered tea terraces.
Afternoon: Tour a working Ceylon tea factory, then explore Gregory Lake and colonial Nuwara Eliya. Bring a jacket - it is cool here year round.

Overnight: Nuwara Eliya

Day 06 :

Nuwara Eliya to Bentota - Madu River & Turtle Hatchery

Descend from the mountains to the southwest coast for the beach half of your holiday.

Afternoon motorboat safari through the mangrove tunnels of the Madu River, stopping at Cinnamon Island.
Visit the Kosgoda sea turtle conservation project - a firm favourite with children.
Check in to your beach resort in time for the Indian Ocean sunset.

Overnight: Bentota

Day 07 :

Bentota Beach Morning & Departure

A final relaxed morning swimming or trying calm-water sports on the Bentota lagoon, followed by a private transfer along the Southern Expressway to Bandaranaike International Airport for your flight home.
